It is run entirely by volunteers. The Society's mission is to promote and maintain rich Russian cultural traditions and help new immigrants integrate into the Canadian way of life. Concerts, lectures, folk dancing, drama club, were some of the activities organized by RCCHF. It has no borders, it is hard to determine its dimensions, but it really does exist throughout the whole world, everywhere where Russian people live, people who ended up outside Russia at different times and for different reasons.\n\n\u201cWe are not exiles; we are envoys.\u201d This aphorism of Zinaida Gippius became, to a degree, the motto of the greater part of this marvellous country.\n\nThe emigration still awaits its chronicler, its academic research \u2013 not political, not pseudo-patriotic or Russophobic, but a deeply human, social and ethnographic understanding of the emigration as a phenomenon. For at the heart of every emigration, to one degree or the other, is a tragedy. Very many people had no choice, in the midst of material good fortune, but to abandon their homes. Anna Akhmatova wrote during the war:\n\nAnd that happy phrase \u2013 at home\n\nIs known to no one at present,\n\nEveryone gazes from some foreign window.\n\nSome from New York, some from Tashkent ...\n\nRussians in Canada ... this is a huge theme. The particular uniqueness of the Canadian diaspora stems from the fact that in the years after WWII, when Canada began to be settled by the emigration from Europe, the Russian community, strangely enough, was the smallest and most divided.\n\nBased on the agreement reached with Stalin at the Yalta conference, after the war the allies handed over former citizens of the USSR for reprisal to the Soviet Union, so for this reason many people identified themselves as Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Ukrainians, changed their names and surnames, birthplaces and passports in order to demonstrate that they were not of Soviet origin. In Toronto there was a small community of older, post-revolution emigrants within the American Metropolia of the Orthodox Church, who welcomed the new countrymen. Among the new arrivals were many people from camps for displaced persons, those who had left their homes with the retreat of the German forces, not wishing to once again be under the repression of the Soviet regime, and prisoners of war who as young people had fallen into the crucible of WWII and had no opportunity to obtain an education or profession.\n\nIn these conditions, establishing organizations with the goal of preserving Russian culture, the Russian language and the Russian community was especially necessary.\n\nThe Russian Canadian Cultural Aid Society was formed in 1950 at the initiative of the professor of the Slavic Department of the University of Toronto, Boris Petrovich Sky (Eglevsky) in order to preserve Russian language and culture in the conditions found abroad.<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eec70ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"eec70ad\"
